Upgrades for the Registered Users:
Commercial Companies
We offer two levels of the software maintenance contracts to the commercial users, who have
previously obtained the HKL license for their in-house detector system(s). The HKL license
is required for each detector at home laboratory.
The following definitions pertain to the maintenance levels:
Program Upgrades
Improvements and additions to the HKL suite occur periodically and new versions are available via FTP from our server. Program upgrade for home detectors received under service contract is
permanent (there is no time limit specified).
Documentation Upgrade
Documentation for the program is periodically improved and expanded. The latest
version of the manual may be ordered directly from HKL Research, Inc.
Copies of the manual are currently available at a cost of $60.00 each.
Data Processing
The data must be sent to us either on CD or by ftp, and
we will make all efforts to obtain useable intensity information from these data. If
successful, we will return the reduced intensity file, all program control information
used to reduce the data, and output files. A data set is defined as data from a single
crystal. The off-line data sets longer than 100 images are treated as two sets. The multi
panel data from Weissenberg stations at Photon Factory are also treated as two sets.

Support Call
Support call consists of contacting HKL Research, Inc. to ask our help in solving a data reduction related problem. Examples
of such problems could be indexing of a single image, diagnosis of crystal defects such as
twinning, useable limits of the data, etc. One service call includes all communication
required to help solve a problem. Bug reports are not considered a support call,
and we encourage any and all reports of difficulties.
Brief description of the maintenance levels:
Level I:
- Program upgrades for the registered in-house detector(s)/operating system(s)
- Update and release of the new license access keys (cr_info)
- 1 copies of the current HKL Manual
- No data processing
- 3 support calls
Level III:
- Program upgrades for the registered in-house detector(s)/operating system(s)
- License extension to process all data that can be processed by the HKL package,
including data from high performance CCD detectors (e.g. Quantum-4,Quantum-210, Quantum-315, CCD MAR, CCD Brandeis
2x2), both at the user’s site and at synchrotron facilities.
- Processing of two data sets (upon request). Data from Photon Factory collected in Weissenberg mode are excluded.
- Update and release of the new license access keys (cr_info)
- 2 copies of the current HKL Manual
- 8 support Calls
The maintenance contract is per site and is valid for all detectors, which have the HKL
license at that site. The maintenance is for 12 months from
the date of the contract. It is possible to upgrade to a higher level of service during a
contract year.
Please Note:
Only Software Maintenance Contract Level III provides access to the program versions, which permit
to process data from high performance CCD detectors, including data transformed to a
different supported format. Level III allows the Licensee to use
the program both at the user's site and at the synchrotron facility, while collecting and
analyzing data. It does not impose any legal limitation on the data format usage and
covers processing of all data that can be processed by the HKL package.
Some detectors are not supported by the HKL package and data
collected with such detectors cannot be recognized by the HKL programs, for instance data
from different multiwire detectors or FAST TV detector. Some other detectors are supported
by the HKL-2000 program only. For example, data produced by APS-1 type of detectors or
Bruker detectors (distributed exclusively by Bruker AXS) can be processed by the HKL-2000,
but not by the HKL.
